A Monarch (poem)

Authors own image: Mannum, South Australia

Sunburst Monarch glows in acacias lemon blush

Gentle life-beats, fragile radiant apricot flush.

I pause entranced, observe this mate of kings

Her delicate fleeting fluttering of wings.

I seize the moment, hold my breath

Slowly lift my camera, zoom, with lens assess.

She stirs, lifts off, I have my shot

Captured, yet free, I’ll not forget.

Its cold out here, she’s seeking cover

Yet with her kind she’ll winter over.

Resting, sheltered in the wattle

Life for her a brief-won battle.
